Vintage Outfit of the Day & How To Make Sure Vintage Fits!

Day two and here I am making another post happen! This post won't be long, but it's here!

Here's a sneak peak at the Vintage Outfit of the Day, we will get into details below.
Vintage Everything except socks!

First though, I want to answer a question I get all the time about vintage clothing. How to make sure the vintage clothing item you're buying is something you can wear, when you can't try it on. When you see that great 80's mini skirt, or the 40's dress you love, you want it to fit!

The supreme rule for buying and wearing vintage clothing - ignore size tags. Seriously. Sizing is subjective even between various clothing manufacturers today.  When you go back 30 or 70 years, it doesn't even bear a faint resemblance to today's sizing. Personally, for vintage clothing at my store, I try to give you an idea of what today's size would be, as well as all applicable measurements, which are the key to fitting correctly.

Measure yourself, or, if you don't feel competent to do that accurately, have a friend help. Use a tape measure, wear either your underwear or something that fits tightly and measure the following places.

1. Shoulder to shoulder: Lift your arm up and down, feel where the joint is and from there measure behind your neck to the same place on the other side. Most reputable vintage clothing dealers will include this measurement. It doesn't need to match yours, but will give you a better idea of how the garment will fit.

2. Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your bust.

3. Waist: Measure your NATURAL waist, not where your pants waistband is, especially if you like low-rise fit trousers and jeans.

4. Hips: Again, the fullest part of your hip.

5. Rise: From the center of the crotch up to where you want pants or shorts to fit, this varies depending on whether it's a high or low waist style, nevertheless, you need to know what will work for you.

6. Inseam: From the crotch to the top of your instep. If you want trousers longer, add an inch or two depending on your preference, for example, if you know you'll be wearing a pair with 3" heels, you probably want to add a couple of inches to your preferred inseam length.

7. Arm Length: From that same shoulder joint to the bottom of your wrist.

8. Remember to give yourself room to move! If the chest measurement of a dress is 38" and your bust is exactly 38" it will be too tight! You have to move, you have to breathe, so give yourself an extra inch or so, depending on how you like to wear your clothes.

This is what you need to know to make sure you can wear the vintage clothing you fall in love with! Making vintage clothing part of your wardrobe is fun and ensures your style is uniquely your own. Have these measurements handy and you can easily see if a vintage clothing item will work for you!

Happy Vintage Wearing!

Now off to the Vintage Outfit of the Day from Vintage Life & Design! Here's what we have:

Vintage 1970's blouse. Remember Prairie Style? Well, here we're giving it a modern twist! A white and blue pinstriped button down cotton blouse, with a ruffled lapel and small ruffles at the cuffs is the starting point.

This cute vintage prairie style blouse is tucked into a pair of vintage 80's high waist shorts (rolled up - you can go shorter or longer!). The shorts are a linen blend and before being rolled are mid-thigh length.

We added a unique and eye-catching detail by using a vintage 1940's necklace of carved Bakelite beads and polished agate nuggets as a belt.

A fabulous chunk of polished agate and copper 70's necklace in the same color tone as the belt is perfect to balance the femininity of the ruffles.

Add a pair of vintage baby blue suede shoes and you are rocking the retro look in a totally modern way!

All vintage clothing items in this outfit (except the socks!) are available at my Etsy Store, although all may not be listed yet. Feel free to contact me if you want to know about an item that's not up yet!
