Vintage Earrings

Today, vintage earrings. There is something about taking a piece of the past and giving it new life that is very satisfying. One of the reasons I love vintage so much is that it is a physical record of the way lifestyles, opinions and views of society in general as and continues to shift through the years.

Vintage costume jewelry, here we're concentrating on vintage earrings, is an easy way to add retro charm and glamor to your wardrobe without breaking your budget. Whether it is a pair of vintage earrings that have clip backs, screw backs, a combination of the two, or a pair that is either old enough to be pierced (ears were commonly pierced up until the very late 1800's - early 1900's when it came to be seen as vulgar. This continued until piercing became popular again in the 1970's) or has been converted, vintage earrings are a way to add a unique and personal touch to anything you wear.

This particular pair of vintage earrings is handmade and  extremely unusual. The leaves/petals are made of some sort of resin or plasticized paper mounted on a screw back and with a tiny actual shell set in the center. They date back to the 1950's and were handmade by someone with serious artistic leaning and a unique sense of style. The type of jewelry made by someone living in The Village in New York City, perhaps?

Vintage earrings can be worn as is, or, in most cases, converted to pierced if desired. Sometimes, if the earrings are unusually delicate or valuable, it is preferable to leave them in their original state.

This batch with two pairs of earrings dating from the late 1960's to early 1970's features pink plastic. Both are clip backs and would be really fun with the right outfit.

This set of two pair of small plastic ball earrings dates from 1960's. The bright colors of the turquoise and purple with the conservative, tiny round button style is perfectly representative of the huge shift in fashion that happened during the early to mid 1960's as society underwent huge social shifts.

This pair of gold fan shaped swirls from the early to mid 1980's is very representative of the fashions and world views of the time. The perfect accessory for the fashion conscious woman who power-dressed to get ahead in her career.

Everything was big, strong and over sized. America was on top and the prevailing culture was all about conspicuous consumption. From giant shoulder pads, brilliant neon colors to large, chunky earrings, subtlety was out.

Representing the more classic style that co-existed - if not always peacefully - even while youthful fashion rebelled and went bohemian and mod, this pair of gold filigree clip earrings are vintage late 1960's Avon.

While you see celebrities wearing vintage jewelry, at awards shows all the time, it's usually of the real gems and worth tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars. Let's face it, that's a little out of reach for most of us.
Below, though, are a couple who used not too crazily expensive vintage earrings that define their very different personal styles.

Amber Rose, who became a celebrity by dating Kanye West, is shown here wearing vintage late 70's earrings by Givenchy.

Emily VanCamp, of ABC TV's show Revenge

Vintage earrings, whether you're fortunate enough to have the real thing handed down from your grandmother, or just love the individuality of vintage jewelry in a more moderate price range, are perfect for defining your style with vintage.

The vintage earrings pictured above (not the ones pictured worn by celebrities) are or will be available soon from my Etsy Store! Feel free to contact me if you want to know about a featured item that isn't listed yet.

Vintage Item of the Day; Vintage Thigh High Black Boots and How to Wear Them

There is something about a great pair of boots. A woman in boots says "hot and in control" like nothing else.

The right pair of boots will boost your confidence level and make you feel sexy, powerful and in control. Great boots with the right outfit are sexy without going too far over the edge, which means you can wear them to work (unless you work at a bank or some other very conservative field), out at night or shopping on a weekend.

Which brings us to today's Vintage Item of the Day, this pair of vintage black boots.

80's Thigh High Black Boots with a 4" Heel

In general with super high heels, you want to avoid micro mini skirts, unless you want to look like you belong on a corner of Hollywood Boulevard and I don't mean waiting to cross the street. That being said, boots cover more leg than a pair of pumps or sandals, so as long as you're not on your way to work thigh high boots actually work with shorter skirts, as long as they're not too short. Also, always remember the rule - if your skirt is short, don't show too much skin on top and vice versa.

Following are some great examples of how you can wear thigh high black boots and look great. As always, I've included links to the sites where I found the photos whenever possible.

I've started out with a few of the more conservative looks that could be work appropriate.

inspiringlook.blogspot.com
I love this runway look incorporating thigh high boots! The somewhat loose white dress and the long black cardigan work beautifully with the boots, balancing out the strength of the boots without taking anything away.

Black on black is always a sophisticated look. The Tuxedo styling on the coat dress adds interest and style.

The look Ann Hathaway is wearing second from the left in the photo below is also work appropriate in many fields.

Both of these collections have some great ideas on what to wear with thigh high boots!

Rihanna has a great look combining this gray jersey dress with black thigh high boots!

A cute casual look with jeans that pretty much anyone can reproduce! Easy, chic and versatile.

Thigh high boots are not just for celebrities, they work for anyone who wants to take their style to a whole new level and this is something you can try just by adding a pair of boots.

The pair of vintage thigh high boots pictured at the top are available at my store, along with loads of other vintage accessories, vintage jewelry, vintage clothing, vintage decor and more. I hope to see you there soon!

Sheer Blouse - Vintage Item of the Day & Style Find!

Well, yep, I messed up on my almost stellar record of updating this blog daily. What can I say, a girl has to take a day off every once in a while, and, well, yesterday was mine. I can pretty much guarantee it will happen again, too, but it will definitely be updated at least a few times a week!

Back again and rarin' to go, though! Today's Vintage Item of the Day is this gorgeous sheer chiffon vintage blouse with a bold gold paisley pattern against black. Definitely a statement piece!

Sheer blouses are one of those staples that come around again every so often during the fashion cycle. Oh yes, it is a cycle;  as any fashionista can attest to!

All the best looks come around again and again and, unfortunately, so do some of the looks that aren't quite so great, but, sometimes you just have to take the good with the bad. That's life, right?

Classic 1980's, this vintage blouse is versatile!  https://www.etsy.com/listing/96407664/vintage-blouse-paisley-sheer-black-gold
Sheer blouses are back. A sheer blouse has been featured in the vast majority of collections shown at New York,  Paris and London's Fashion Week for the past couple of times.

So what can you do with a sheer blouse? Well, really, it's only limited by your imagination.

Following though, are some photos of blouses & girls who figured out how to wear them, to give you inspiration on how to make this super trendy and sexy look part of your own!

Dolce & Gabbana, retails for $405.00

Where possible, I've tried to identify where the other items came from, but for some of them all I can do is credit Google, I'm afraid.

No idea who or where, cute combo though!

A Vintage Dress Clip, What to Do With It?

Dress Clips. Maybe you've seen them, maybe you even have one in the back of your jewelry  box that belonged to a great aunt or grandmother. Some are more elaborate than others and people don't wear them much these days, which is a shame because talk about a piece of vintage jewelry that is versatile and beautiful, dress clips do both.

Today's Vintage Item of the Day is, guess what, a dress clip!

Vintage 1930's Dress Clip, Made in Czeck.

A dress clip is a real piece of fashion history. Simply by its existence, a dress clip can be dated to somewhere between the mid 1920's and the late 1940's.

An every day version, in silver filigree, late 1920's.

Every woman owned one, most owned several. It was important to have some simple dress clips for every day, as well as more elaborate versions for dressing up and special occasions. Dress clips could take an ordinary day dress and make it suitable for an evening out.

Shown here, two matching dress clips.
Dress clips were most often worn at the neckline of a dress, either singly or in pairs.

They ranged from the plain silver for every day to elaborate rhinestone or real gemstone confections, such as the one shown below on actress Hedy Lamarr.

Actress Hedy Lamarr, 1945.

This elaborately jeweled dress clip was hooked on a ribbon and worn as a necklace.

One of the great things about vintage dress clips is their versatility. They could still and can be worn on a dress or a coat, in the hair or attached to a ribbon or chain for a necklace.

This vintage rhinestone dress clip has been hooked onto a plain, button up denim shirt.

A vintage dress clip can be clipped onto any item of clothing. If your blouse or dress is made of fragile fabric though, you might want to think twice. The prongs on some vintage dress clips can be vicious!

A closer look at the sharp prongs on a vintage dress clip. They were meant to keep the dress clip firmly anchored, and they did, but can be damaging to delicate fabrics, so be careful.

Famous Mermaid Movie Darling Esther Williams is shown here wearing  a Beautiful Coro dress clip that has been clipped onto  jeweled chain to be worn  for a necklace.

Joan Crawford, 1943.

Lana Turner, 1939.

Once you know what to look for, you'll find dress clips adorning ladies of all stations in life from the mid to late 1920's through the early 1950's and many of them are just a gorgeous now! So if you are luck enough to own one (or two, or three) or come across one that tickles your jewelry bone, put it to use and add some vintage glamor to your everyday look!

Vintage Item of the Day - Vintage Compact & How to Make Your Own Pressed Powder!

I am currently patting myself on the back. Really. After all, I have been updating this blog every day. Thanks for reading it, by the way!

This blog, like everything else in my life, is undergoing constant evolution, and I've realized something. Ok, actually several somethings. The first, I need more hands. Next, more hours in the day. Finally, I have realized I need an assistant.

Since I don't have time to find one at the moment, that means I have to condense a bit. This is my round about way of explaining that I just don't have time to do a full outfit of the day every day right now.

I still love the idea and will bring it back periodically and hopefully permanently in the future, but for now, I'm down-sizing to the Vintage Item of the Day, instead. That, I think I can manage.

Bear with me, please. I will still show outfits on occasion, but the upside is I can include other vintage items as well as vintage clothing and vintage jewelry, which is fabulous!

After all, there are sooo many cool vintage things out there!

Without further ado, I present today's Vintage Item of the Day, a vintage compact!

Now I love vintage compacts. To me, using a vintage compact instead of one the run of the mill boring ones you get at the drugstore or make-up counter is just the ultimate in cool.

This particular compact dates from the late 1940's - early 1950's. It is brass and has a beautiful floral print on celluloid on the lid. These celluloid inserts aren't around much, because they didn't last well, so finding one that is intact is pretty cool.

So this beautiful brass compact has a history, one of the coolest things about vintage, honestly!

This vintage compact has the original sifter and the original puff. Other than the wear and tear caused by being almost 75 years old, this vintage compact is in great shape!

Here I'm going to share a tip on HOW to use a vintage compact, because it's possible you might have wondered. After all, even if you find a vintage compact with the original powder intact (some collectors look for that, not to use though), ancient powder is definitely not something you want to put on your face!

Powder from mid-century frequently contained lead, for one thing. Not mention, it's just really, really old. Cool to see, yes, to use, no.

So, if you prefer pressed powder to loose, here is how to fill your vintage compact with fresh new pressed powder you can actually use.

Here you go, simple as can be.

Buy some loose powder in a brand you like and color you use. Pour it out in a bowl. Now take a bottle of rubbing alcohol. Slowly pour some into the powder and mix carefully, gradually adding more rubbing alcohol until you have a thin "soupy" mixture with no clumps. Now carefully (it splashes and makes a mess easily!) pour it into the bottom of your vintage compact. Set your vintage compact filled with powder soup somewhere safe and just leave it be until all the alcohol evaporates.

An Ad for Compacts, 1953

Depending on the humidity levels where you live, this can take anywhere from 24 hours to three or four days. When it is finally dry though, you have a beautiful vintage compact filled with your favorite powder to use every day!

The ultimate in glamor, a vintage compact.

The brass with floral inset vintage compact shown above, along with others, is available at my Etsy store, Vintage Life & Design, LLC. Hope to see you there soon!

Vintage Outfit of the Day, Today, Green.

Here is a single outfit with a couple of variations. The blazer is vintage, somewhere between chartreuse and lime green that was made by a high end designer from the late 80's.

A narrower black belt, in this case a vintage belt from 1984, adds definition to the waist of the long jacket. Of course, you can always skip the belt entirely, leaving the jacket open or closed, it works regardless.

The vintage jacket is layered over an off white camisole and a dark forest green suede skirt from the very early1980's.

A pair of black thigh high vintage stiletto boots with pointed toes from the early 90's is part of the first version of this outfit.
For a little variation, change out the shoes and the belt. Everything else is the same.

The black suede vintage belt is from the early 80's, the vintage shoes are from the late 1960's - early 1970's.

The finishing touch for this outfit is an Edwardian Silver Brooch, in this case attached to a ribbon choker from the late 1970's.

By way of showing even more options, here's the blazer with jeans, for a much more casual look!

Many of the vintage clothing items in this outfit is or will be available soon from my Etsy Store! Feel free to contact me if you want to know about a featured item that isn't listed yet.

Sorry, but the black suede shoes, belt and camisole are from my personal collection and used for display only.

I am a fabulous vintage and antique detective too, so, if you're searching for something in particular, I can help!
